It seems like we moved quickly into summer weather this least week.
After a series of frosts, we seem to be out of danger with strawberries. While we lost our early blossoms, the early varieties have continued to bloom and the late ones are not at full bloom.
We may have some strawberries available at the stand as early as the week of Memorial Day. We have berries showing and the warm weather could push them ahead. We wil likely begin with a limited market schedule. Keep checking the web or information line.
My best guess would be U-Pick would open sometime the first week in June. We'd have limited quantities of the early berries.
We've removed the plastic covering from our early sweet corn and its growing skyward again. We'll continue to plant sweet corn until mid July. We've planted tomatoes, swiss chard, peas, squash, cucumbers and next year's strawberries.
Unfortunately, we lost our sweet cherry crop to frost, but the raspberries continue to look good.
At this point it looks like our season seems to be ahead of "normal" one week to two weeks.
The only vegetable we have available is a little asparagus, which we will have on a table out front of the farm or at the market once it it open.
Our Coulter Farms produce information recording at 716-434-5700 is now active. Our stand line 716-433-8300 will be active May 25th and will be have a person available during stnad hours.
Hope you had a great spring...

Raspberries look good. They don't mind the wet weather at this stage of the season. Most are on gravel. We're securing the canes to the support strings this year to prevent fruitng canes falling to the ground,

A young U-Picker at the home farm. Notice the familiar stains around the mouth and hands. This is really what it is all about.
I don't get in many pictures, but these are the way I think the "King" berries shoudl look on Jewels. We're working toward providing more like these to our stand and U-Pick customers. Howevr strawberries are a tender crop and have many obstacles to overcome to reach the picking stage in good health.

Sweet Corn showing tassel and beginning to form ears. Old 1957 Doge to right. Same field as below two seek later 2011.
June 3rd: early sweet corn was started under plastic. The plastic has come off and corn is growing rapidly. The black plastic line between rows is trickle irrigation which will maintain moisture. our first corn should be ready in early July 2011.
Here is part of our corn picking crew on our one rainy day in July. We've had trouble this year with too wet, too dry and now birds and racoons. However, we still happy to be able to supply fresh corn to our customers in spite of these obstacles..
